News and Announcements :: August 24, 2009
The third annual Cops and Rodders car, truck and motorcycle show will be held Saturday, October 31, 2009, from 8 AM to 4 PM at Hi-Corbett Field in Reid Park. This fun event is a partnership between the community, the Tucson Police Foundation and the Tucson Police Department, in effort to raise funds to support important programs for the police department, the Foundation and the community. For example, we will be collecting cans of food and food items for the community food bank, unwrapped toys and gifts for girls and boys for the Santa Cop program and we will be holding our first ever, "Safe Halloween" trick or treat at the show for the children.
I want to thank all of the participants who register their vehicles and bring them to the show for all of us to admire. Without our participants there would be no show. This year we have 61 different categories for cars, trucks and motorcycles and we will give over 200 awards to participants. When you come to the show you will see classic cars, trucks and motorcycles from the 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s all the way up through our newest and classiest models. Also there will be displays of police vehicles from the helicopter and SWAT vehicle to a state of the art driving simulator! We will have plenty of variety of food and drinks, and we will have a large number of vendors there selling a wide variety of products. We will be raffling off a 350 Chevy Motor and Turbo Transmission being donated by Capin Automotive and 2 classic collector's pedal cars, being tricked out by Chuck Zinke of Perfection Powder Coating, Larry Burris of Metal Masters and Hi-Speed Auto! Last year we had over 500 cars, trucks and motorcycles and about 6,000 spectators!
We are going to have some of our great events such as our pine car derby, run by Officer David Rencken, police emergency vehicle driving coordinator for TPD, sponsored by Pizza Hut of Arizona, and assisted by Home Depot and the Boy Scouts of America. We have a new event for kids, a pedal car race, run by Sgt. Tony Kadous, and Foundation board member, Frank Youdelman, sponsored by the BMW club of Tucson and cars purchased by great companies like the Arizona Rangers, Beat Cancer Boot Camp, Target, Mr. Rick Stertz, and Steve Rogers of Air Conditioning Services! In addition to the "Safe Halloween" trick or treat for kids we will have a "Haunted House" sponsored by the TPD Explorer program, and a special Halloween Costume Contest for Adults and Children being coordinated by our fantastic music man, "DJ John" Strobeck. We will also have Gary Goltz back portraying the man himself, "Broderick Crawford" of the old television series Highway Patrol. And speaking of that, we will have many personally owned police and fire vehicles on display at the show as well.
I want to give special thanks to this year's title sponsor, Steve and Pam Shell who own IOTA Engineering, without whom there would be no show. I also must thank Brake Masters for their sponsorship of our trophies, Barbara LaWall and the Pima County Attorney's Office, Tucson Old Pueblo Credit Union, Victory Motorcycles, Frank Arrotta and Journal Broadcasting, Doug Martin of Good News Communications, and the LG Wolf Construction company for their sponsorships and Graphic Impact for donated banners as well Aladdin T-shirts for the great new logo. Of course I must thank the Tucson Parks and Recreation Director, Fred Gray, and Chief of Police Roberto Villasenor and their staffs for helping with the show. Finally, the Cops and Rodders committee has been working diligently since last February to bring this event to you, so when you see people walking around in STAFF or Volunteer T-shirts, tell them "Thank You" and give them a pat on the back — that is their pay.
We put on this great event each year, because we want our community to connect with one of the best police departments in America. And we want to promote our vision for Tucson, to become "The Safest City in America." Join us for a great time and while you are there, learn how you can help your police department.
